The street gets its name from the insignia on a sign dating back to the fifteenth century, when all the surrounding areas was known as “La Scrofa”. In 1580, a small statue depicting this animal, probably a fragment from an ancient frieze, was encased in the wall on the façade of the Augustinian convent and transformed into a fountain. In Ancient Rome, the pig was associated to fertility (the sow indicated the great mother), while with the spread of Christianity, it became a symbol of indecency, or carnal passions and lust, and was even compared to the devil.
