Fountain of the Sea Horses

You are along the route: THE ZOO OF WONDERS. STONE ANIMALS

Villa Borghese. Piazzale dei Cavalli Marini
Always visible.

This fountain, in a small square near a junction of four tree-lined paths in the park, was built in the late eighteenth century to replace the fontana del Mascherone, which had been destroyed earlier. In the middle of a large round basin, four sea horses emerge from the water, while they rise with their manes in the air, hooves raised and bodies in the form of fish. Their tails are intertwined in the middle and water flows around the hooves of these strange animals, flowing into a basin supported by the horses’ heads while they emerge with force from the fountain.
