We know this church dates back to the 11th century, when Pope Paschal II built a chapel over the Roman tomb of the Domitians, in honour of the Madonna. The building, enlarged in 1227 by Pope Gregory IX and then completely renovated by Pope Sixtus IV for the Jubilee of 1475, houses the icon of Madonna del Popolo – Our Lady of the People, also known as the Madonna di San Luca, the work of a Roman painter from the late thirteenth century. One of the most venerated images of Rome, the icon represents the Virgin with her Child on her left arm, according to the model of the Hodegetria “She who shows the Way”. To ward off the attack of the Turks between 1458 and 1470, the icon was carried in procession through the city.
