San Francesco d’Assisi (St. Francis of Assisi)
Founded in the 16th century, this church was renovated and dedicated to St. Francis after the Saint from Assisi stayed there during his visits to the Pope between 1209 and 1223. The current building is a 17th century renovation, in which Bernini was also involved. In the Sacred Cell of the Saint, inside the wooden altar, in an impressive device of Baroque cupboards, a large table holds centre stage with the famous Portrait of Saint Francis dating back to the 13th century and attributed to Margaritone d’Arezzo. The Saint is standing up, brandishing a red cross in his right hand and holding the Gospel open on the page of Mark in his left hand; the stigmas are obvious. The Madonna and Child known as the Madonna of Health is also venerated in the convent, in the iconographic model of the Gliykohpilousa (Mother of God of Tenderness).
