The church was built on the ruins of the Temple of Juno Moneta, which was on the Arx, one of the two peaks of the Capitoline Hill, on the site where according to tradition Augustus had a vision of the Virgin on an altar. In 1250, Pope Innocent IV granted the building to the Franciscans, who refurbished the church in its current layout. The main altar houses a 11th century painting of the Madonna the Protector, by a Roman painter, which depicts the Virgin without Child and with her hands held up towards the sky in a sign of intercession. An object of very ancient devotion, the painting was invoked as protector of the city during the epidemics which spread through Rome. It was carried in procession during the plague of 1348. It is believed to also have been venerated by Saint Gregory the Great and Saint Frances of Rome.
