The basilica, founded in the 6th century, is dedicated to two Greek brothers, the doctors Cosmas and Damian, 6th century martyrs, who dedicated their lives to tending to the needy. In the church, belonging to Franciscan friars since the 16th century, the 13th century icon of the Madonna and Child on the throne, on the main altar, is an object of devotion. It is also known as the Madonna of Saint Gregory, Madonna of Health or Greeting Madonna, from the miraculous recall of the Virgin to Saint Gregory the Great (590-604) for him to start greeting her again, as he had once done every morning: “Gregory, why don’t you greet me anymore, as you always did?”. The Madonna is holding the Child in her right arm, head bowed and holding the small hand of her Son in her left hand in an affectionate gesture of tenderness. Jesus is depicted while blessing with his right hand.
