This is one of the four patriarchal basilicas, founded by Pope Liberius on the site of a miraculous snowfall occurring on August 5, 356. The basilica was renovated a century later, after the Council of Ephesus which had established once and for all the dogma of the Theotokos, of Virgin Mary Mother of God. The nave is covered with a coffered ceiling, gilded with the first gold from the Americas. This was at the beginning of the Jubilee Year 1500 of pope Alexander VI.
In 1741 in preparation for the Jubilee of 1750, Benedict XIV appointed Alexander Fuga to design a new facade, to be superimposed on the previous one. The rhythmic effect between straight and curved lines, the contrast between the first and second order of the façade, and between this and the side elevation of the buildings are of particular note. The Holy Door is the entrance to the left of the central bronze door.
From the loggia you can still admire the late thirteenth century mosaics by Filippo Rusuti. In the nave above the entablature, there are mosaic panels from the era of Sixtus III, with stories of the ancient patriarchs.
