The Mater Misericordiae (Madonna of Mercy)
The church, dating back to the 5th century, was built on the house of the Roman senator Pudens who, with his two daughters Pudentiana and Praxedes, was converted to Christianity by the Apostle Peter, who lived in his home for seven years. On the altar of the second chapel on the right, built between 1690 and 1696, is a contemporary painting of the Madonna and Child on the throne, a replica with variants of the icon of the Madonna of Clemency, venerated in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The Enthroned Madonna is dressed as a queen and is sitting with her Son on her lap. The Child is blessing and holding the globe with apical cross and a scroll; the mother is supporting Him and holding a long patriarchal cross in her right hand. The altar contains the inscription “Mater Misericordiae”.
