Headquarters of the new order of Jesuits, the church of Sant’Andrea al Quirinale was built between 1658 and 1678 and designed by Bernini. In the adjoining convent, the cell of Saint Stanislav Kostka is still venerated, and is now a chapel. The painting of the Madonna and Child (1565-1572) is kept in the chambers of the Saint, and is am modern replica of the very old icon of the Mother of God venerated in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The Virgin is depicted standing up, with a cut half way up her leg, supporting her blessing Child on her left, but with both hands. The Child holds a closed book in his left hand. In the period of the counter-reformation, the spreading of this cult was well supported by the Jesuits, because of its devotion to their founder Saint Ignatius Loyola.
