Aqueduct in Mandrione district

You are along the route: AQUEDUCTS AND FOUNTAINS. THE MARVEL OF WATER

casilina1
From the via Tuscolana/via del Mandrione crossroad, all along via Mandrione until reaching Piazza Lodi.
Always visible.

Travelling along via del Mandrione and then via Casilina Vecchia, to Piazza Lodi, one can follow a long almost intact stretch of the Felice aqueduct, next to the ancient arches of the Roman aqueduct of the Emperor Claudius. It is a picturesque stretch, a quarter which for decades was little more than a tent city in which poor and emarginated families and small-scale craftsmen lived in precarious houses in shadows of the arches of the aqueduct. It is a place of misery, but also live and real sentiments, which attracted renowned intellectuals such as Moravia and Pasolini. The ancient aqueduct is still part of everyday life today, intermingling with the railway lines, the farmed fields that it borders, improvised shelters and the bars and locales based around its splendid atmosphere.
