The fountain is a spectacular ending to the ancient Roman Aqua Marcia aqueduct, restored by Pope Pius IX in 1870. The basin by the engineer Alessandro Guerrieri dates back to 1888 and in 1901, the Sicilian sculptor Mario Rutelli sculpted the four bronze nymphs: one of the lakes, with a swan, one of the rivers, with a sea monster, one of the oceans, with a wild horse, and one of the underground waters, with a dragon. The central group, Glaucus with a dolphin, by the same sculptor was added in 1912 and the fountain was inaugurated in 1914 in a in a mass of water sprays (over three hundred) and a very high jet of water coming out of the dolphin’s mouth. A liberty masterpiece, it was placed in a key part of the city, near the station, between the Baths of Diocletian and the 19th century buildings by Gaetano Koch, in the form of the exedra of the ancient baths.
