A Baroque masterpiece, the Fontana del Tritone was built in 1643 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII (Barberini) (1623-1644), and is at the centre of the square named after the beautiful palace of the Papal family, on which Bernini himself also worked. On an enormous bivalve shell, an imposing triton inflates its cheeks blowing into a buccina (an ancient wind instrument in the form of a shell) which is held up high by its arms and from which water gushes into the fountain. The shell is supported by four dolphins with their tails pointed upwards, between which are two large Papal coats of arms with the three bees, the symbol of the Barberini family. The fountain was also called the “playing Triton” because of the noise of the water gushing out, which was once very loud.

Created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the form of a large open shell, the Fountain of the Bees was conceived by the sculptor as a fountain to quench the thirst of wanderers and wash horses. The water gushes out of three large bees, a homage to the Barberini Pope, sculpted on the large vertical shell valve on which an inscription is carved dedicated to Pope Urban VIII, who ordered its construction for use by the people in 1644. The fountain, made of travertine, was originally in the corner of the square just off via Sistina, but was removed for viability reasons in 1867. In 1917, a travertine copy by the sculptor Adolfo Apolloni, made using the remaining parts of the original fountain, was relocated at the top of Via Veneto, where it is still used to quench the thirst of passers-by today.
