You are along the route: AQUEDUCTS AND FOUNTAINS. THE MARVEL OF WATER
Piazza delle Quattro Fontane
The Four Fountains complex, built from 1588 to 1590, highlights the crossroads between the Strada Pia (now via XX settembre and via del Quirinale) and the Strada Felice (now via delle Quattro Fontane and via Sistina), built by Pope Sixtus V (Felice peretti). Placed on the corners of the buildings, the fountains are characterised by a semi-circular basin and the presence of a figure stretched out with vegetation in the background. The two male figures are the personifications of the Arno and Tiber rivers and the two females are the divinities Juno and Diana. The Arno is depicted by a lion, the symbol of Florence, and a field of canes in the background, the Tiber by a wolf, symbol of Rome, and a cornucopia, Juno by a lion, a crown, a peacock in the background, and Diana by a dog, her sacred animal.
