In 1586, Pope Sixtus V commissioned the architect Domenico Fontana to plan the layout of piazza di Monte Cavallo, now piazza del Quirinale, including moving and restoring the statues of the Dioscuri, the two twins, originally from the nearby Baths of Constantine. The marble statutes were placed on a tall pedestal in the middle of the square, facing the Palazzo, and a basin surmounted by a round, concave vase from which the water cascaded down.
In 1782, the architect Giovanni Antinori built a new design commissioned by Pope Pius VI. The Dioscuri were separated and placed at right angles, with one of the two red granite obelisks built in the 1st century AD for the tomb of Augustus between them. The previous fountain was replaced by an ancient round basin, also in granite, found in the Roman Forum.Foto Presidenza della Repubblica
