Located opposite the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the fountain was commissioned in 1715 by Pope Clement XI from the architect Francesco Carlo Bizzaccheri and inaugurated in 1719. The design, based on the Fontane del Tritone by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, is by the architect Francesco Carlo Bizzaccheri (1655-1721), who created, in homage to the Pope, a basin inspired by the eight-point star on the coat of arms of the Albani family. At the centre of this is a rocky shoreline and tufts of vegetation, sculpted by Filippo Bai. Above the shoreline are two kneeling tritons, with tails intertwined, sculpted by Francesco Moratti, supporting a shell acting as a spout and decorated on the sides with Papal coats of arms and three hills in the middle, another symbol of the Albani family, from which the water gushes.
