The fountain, now in piazza Trilussa, was originally on the other side of Ponte Sisto, at the end of via Giulia. It was built in 1613 as a display of the Aqua Paola, the ancient aqueduct built by Trajan and restored by Pope Paul V to supply Trastevere, by Giovanni Vasanzio with the help of Domenico Fontana. In 1870, when it was decided to widen the banks of the Tiber, the neighbouring building was demolished and the fountain stored by the City Council. In 1898, decision was made to have it rebuilt in its current location above a stairway, by the architect Angelo Vescovali. The façade of the Ponte Sisto fountain and the Fontanone del Gianicolo can be admired together from Ponte Sisto.
