The fountain was built by the sculptor Pietro Bernini, assisted by his son Gian Lorenzo, between 1627 and 1629, on commission by pope Urban VIII. According to tradition, the boat form is based on that of an ancient vessel which was found on this site after the Tiber had flooded. The idea of placing the vessel at ground level, in an oval basin semi-submerged in water, is a technical expedient used to adjust the fountain to the low pressure of the Acqua Vergine aqueduct at this point. Two Papal coats of arms decorate the fountain and water gushes out of the mouths of two suns, another symbol of the Barberini family. The “Barcaccia” is in one of the most beautiful and scenic squares in Rome, in front of the famous stairway designed by Francesco De Sanctis and inaugurated for the Jubilee in 1725.
