You are along the route: AQUEDUCTS AND FOUNTAINS. THE MARVEL OF WATER
The layout of piazza del Popolo, with its elliptical form, is due to the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Valadier. After the removal of the old fountain by Giacomo della Porta, which is now in piazza Nicosia, in 1823 he built a square base around the Egyptian obelisk (which was put up here by Pope Sixtus V in 1589) with four fountains in the corners, constituted by four travertine basins surmounted by Egyptian style marble lions with water gushing out from their throats. Another two fountains are on the sides of the hemicycles. That of the Goddess Roma, with helmet and spear, flanked by personifications of the Tiber and Aniene, including the she-wolf feeding the twins, faces the Pincio, with the fountain of Neptune with a trident, flanked by two tritons and two dolphins, on the other side.
