The fountain was built in 1928 in the public garden in the middle of the square by the sculptor Attilio Selva, from Trieste, who won the competition tended by the Governorate of Rome for the enhancement of the quarter. The layout is inspired by traditional sixteenth century fountains, with a wide circular basin, a vase supported by a central structure and another smaller one, surmounted by a pigna with water flowing out. This is supported by naked female figures sitting down, the Caryatids after which the fountain is named. The nudity and pose of the figures caused such indignation and criticism that the inauguration of the fountain was postponed for several months.
