This work represents the crucial moment in mythological conflict when Hercules, furious and suffering because of the tunic poisoned by the blood of the centaur Nexus, grabs his herald Lichas, who had unwittingly brought it to him, and throws him into the sea. This was a chance for the artist to experiment in the heroic genre which was very different from the grace of his famous female images. Political and economic reasons forced Gaetani to renounce the commission in 1798. The work thus remained in its chalk version and it was only finished in marble at the start of the century, on the wishes of the Prince of Torlonia.
