Sculpted between 1805 and 1808, it depicts Paolina Borghese Bonaparte, wife of the Prince Camillo Borghese, in an unusual nude pose for a person of her rank, inspired by the classical statue. Venus victorious in the opinion of Paris thus became a beautiful woman of modern times, languidly reclining on a bed covered by a thin sheet which enhances the nude parts of her body. Paolina insisted that the work be displayed in Paris, but without ever overcoming her husband’s resistance to the idea. After being moved numerous times because of its strident contrast with the morals of the Restoration period, it only reached its final destination in Villa Borghese in 1838.
