The House-Studio of Antonio Canova is a simple building characterised by numerous fragments of statutes, architraves and sculptures of Ancient Rome, which were easily available to the artist thanks to his mandate from the Inspector-General of Antiquities. After moving to Rome and spending a short time in Palazzo Venezia with the Ambassador of the Serenissima (Republic of Venice), he decided to buy a house that he could also use as a studio. Initially made up of a series of small houses, it was rebuilt into a single structure, with an enormous laboratory described by his friend and heir Antonio d’Este as a “statuary workshop”. The plaque on one of the facades is testimony to the inheritance by the latter of the house and all of the tools of the trade.
