monumento funebre di clemente XIV - a canova

Located at the end of the left nave of the Basilica, the tomb was built by Canova between 1783 and 1787 in memory of Pope Clement XIV, thanks to the intercession of his friend Giovanni Volpato. The structure is vertical and ascending, starting at the bottom from the entrance door, touching the two allegorical figures of Temperance and Meekness, passing the sarcophagus and culminating in a figure of the Pope himself. Sitting on the throne with his arm raised in an imperious gesture, the Pope has a serious face with frowning eyebrows, showing the inflexibility which enabled him to make peremptory decisions, such as the suppression of the company of Jesus.

stele funeraria Giovanni Volpato - A_Canova - Copia

Located in the atrium of the Basilica, it was built at Canova’s expense between 1804 and 1807 as a tribute to his friend and countryman Giovanni Volpato, who has obtained for him the commission for the Tomb of Clement XIV in the same Basilica, consecrating him as the most famous artist of the age. by choosing a bas relief in marble propped against a wall, the artist inaugurated the series of tombs depicting figures of crying women, in this case representing Friendship, before a bust of the deceased or an urn containing his ashes, according to an obviously classical based layout.
