Villa Doria Pamphilj, open to the public since 1972, covers 184 hectares and is one of the most important and largest historical villas in Rome, Enlarged over time thanks to the continuous purchase of the surrounding land, the villa preserves traces of the transformations that occurred from the 17th to the 19th centuries, when the country villa of the Pamphilj family took on the appearance of a vast noble residence, immersed in a marvellous park. On 2 December 1786, Goethe recalled his visit to the Sistine Chapel a few days previously, followed by an excursion to Villa Pamphilj:
From there, under a sun perhaps too hot, we went to Villa Pamphilj, where beautiful feasts are often held, lasting well into the night. A large dawn bordered by oak trees and tall pines, and seeded by a myriad of little daisies with their little heads pointing towards the sun, aroused by botanical speculations once again, I who had immersed myself in them two days beforehand as well, during a walk in Monte Mario and to Villa Madama and Villa Mellini.
