The church was built in 1626 on the wishes of Cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of Pope Urban VIII, and is decorated by two large pillars illustrating, sometimes beside each other, the two artistic trends of the times. The triumphal and canonical image of the Church is represented by the Archangel Michael, in the first chapel on the right, which Guido Reni painted in 1635to represent the triumph over the devil, the symbol of heresy; Ananias restoring the sight of St. Paul, in the first chapel on the left, by Pietro da Cortona (1631); and St. Anthony of Padua bringing a dead man back to life, painted by Andrea Sacchi in 1635, in the fifth chapel on the left. Contrarily, the naturalist and intimal language derived from Caravaggio’s style of painting is represented by Christ derided by Gerard van Honthorst, in the first chapel on the right, in which the degraded contemporary world represented by the three soldiers in seventeenth century uniform can be seen, and The Adoration of the Shepherds by Lanfranco, in the same chapel, which is a night time scene in which the light clearly illuminates the child in the manger.
