The Chapel of the Angels, in the Church of Jesus, was entirely decorated by Federico Zuccari from 1599. The ceiling fresco depicts the Coronation of the Virgin Mary and the altarpiece shows the Seven Archangels in adoration of the Most Holy Trinity. The two panels on the sidewalls show the Fall of the Rebel Angels and the Angels freeing souls from Purgatory. The decoration of the lunettes and the arches is also attributed to Zuccari. The decoration of the chapel, characterized by extreme refinement and formal, almost archaic rigour is filled with references to fifteenth century Tuscan artist style. The simplicity and clarity of composition combined with a severe, balanced language are in perfect harmony with the demands of the Counter-Reformation.
