In 1606 Pieter Paul Rubens was appointed to decorate the apse of the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, the New Church of the Oratorians. In 1608, three oil on slate panels were added: the large altarpiece with the Madonna Vallicelliana adored by the angels and two sets of three saints on the sides of the presbytery depicting Saints Domitilla, Nereus and Achilles and opposite, Saints Gregorio, Mauro and Papiano. The three compositions form a unified work of art, whose focus is constituted by the devotional image of the Virgin in the centre of the apse. The intense dynamism, the representation of an illusive and spectacular space, the evocative lighting effects seem to prelude the motifs of baroque art, of which Rubens can be considered one of the precursors.
