Shortly after taking part in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel, Pinturicchio was commissioned to paint a chapel in Santa Maria in Aracoeli for the consistorial lawyer, Nicolò Bufalini. Between 1484 and 1486, Pinturicchio frescoed the vault with the four Evangelists, the back wall with the Glory of San Bernardino (which follows the pattern of a fresco by Perugino in the Sistine Chapel, destroyed to make room for the Last Judgement by Michelangelo) and the side walls with scenes from the life of the saint, who was canonized by Pope Nicholas V during the Jubilee of 1450. The significance of the frescoes is the introduction onto the Roman scene of the latest trends in Florentine painting; the insertion of holy stories in a space realistically constructed according to the basis of perspective. Pinturicchio added a marked tendency towards the ancient, visible in his quotations of classical architecture and his use of grotesque decoration.
