In the left aisle of the upper basilica is the Chapel of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, commissioned by Cardinal Branda Castiglioni from Masolino da Panicale, probably between 1428 and 1431. Some scholars sustain that Masaccio was also working here at the same time, just as he had been for the decoration of the Brancacci Chapel in Florence. In any case, the strong setting perspective of the Annunciation painted on the outside wall, which requires a precise point of observation, as well as the perspective construction of the locations in the Stories of St. Catherine are the earliest infusion in Rome of the artistic reflections underway in Florence in the early fifteenth century.
