The eighteenth-century restoration of the church spared the altar area and the cycle of frescoes, painted around 1492 by Antoniazzo Romano in collaboration with Marco Palmezzano, which can still be admired today. In the semi dome of the apse, Christ in Glory surrounded by a mandorla of seraphim angels, within a starry sky were depicted. Another band of seraphim divides the upper part of the fresco of Christ from the lower part, which describes the Stories of the True Cross, taken from the Golden Legend by Jacopo da Varazze, and describing the discovery of the cross of Christ in the Holy Land by the Empress Helena, the mother of Constantine. The scenes are organized in a continuous, undivided register, unified by the landscape.
