The construction of a circus in this area was probably started by Emperor Caracalla (212-217 AD). The original length (about 640 m), greater than that of the Circus Maximus, could be ascertained thanks to the discovery in 2014 of a portion of the west tower that overlooked the starting gate booths of the chariots. The later emperor, Heliogabalus, had reduced the size of the circus. The obelisk, named after Antinous and which is today situated on the Pincio had once been placed on the Spine of the circus.
The Aurelian walls (271-275 AD) cut the Circus in two, irrevocably distorting its original purpose. In the fourth century the part remaining within the walls was converted into service rooms and possibly housing for the servants of the court of Constantine. The structures that are still visible are those that supported the stands for spectators.
