We know this church dates back to the 11th century, when Pope Paschal II built a chapel over the Roman tomb of the Domitians, in honour of the Madonna. Pope Sixtus IV, ordered its reconstruction for the Jubilee of 1475, but he also wanted to protect it with two towers (which no longer exist), built close to today’s Porta del Popolo.
The church has three naves, topped by an octagonal dome supported by a drum, the first example of its kind in Rome.
In 1600 Monsignor Tiberio Cerasi, Treasurer General of the Apostolic Chamber, entrusted Caravaggio with the interior decoration of the left transept of his chapel with two side panels depicting the Crucifixion of Peter and the Conversion of Paul, the two saints to whom the chapel was dedicated.
Of the works that followed, the most important was carried out by Bernini on the facade, between 1655 and 1659.
