Route: THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THE POPES. JUBILEE WORKS
Borgo S. Spirito, 1-2; Via dei Penitenzieri,…
You are along the route: COMMITMENT AND HOLINESS. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA AND FILIPPO NERI
The origins of the institution date back to the VIII century, but only during the papacy of Pope Innocent III (1198-1216), was the hospital entrusted to the order of the Holy Spirit for the care of the sick, the poor and abandoned children. Its revival took place under Sixtus IV, in preparation for the Jubilee of 1475. On such occasions, the priority was to assist and accommodate pilgrims visiting the city. Reconstruction and expansion work took place at the hands Baccio Pontelli between 1471 and 1478. Facing the entrance of Borgo Santo Spirito, the Sistine Corridor can be easily seen. Halfway along this long corridor there is a tiburium (the architectural framework of a dome). A cycle of fifteenth century frescoes illustrates the history of Santo Spirito, from the works of Innocent to its reformation by Sixtus. Today the complex is included in the Museum Centre of ASL Roma 1 (local health unit).
