Federico Zuccari went to Rome in 1550 as a student of his brother Taddeo. The Flagellation painted for the Oratory is the only fresco of the whole cycle of the Stories of the Passion to have been dated, 1573. The coat of arms of Cardinal Girolamo Mattei, who commissioned the work, is shown below. Zuccari made reference to the Flagellation by Sebastiano del Piombo in San Pietro in Montorio and the characters are quotes from Raphael and Piero della Francesca. The importance of the Oratorio del Gonfalone fresco is certainly the introduction of the bottom-up perspective that enhances the almost theatrical portrayal of the scene. Indeed the artist set the story on a theatre stage with curtains that open.
