Annibale Carracci painted the Beaneater, one of the earliest genre scenes of Italian art, between 1584 and 1585. Originally belonging to Cardinal Lazzaro Pallavicini, the picture was later traded to the Colonna Princes and kept in the Gallery of the Palace, where it remains to this day. The painting depicts a rough peasant who is about to consume his humble meal. The look in amazement, mouth wide open and hand holding a spoon in the air, seem to show the surprise of the villain at the sight of the observer. Annibale’s Beaneater is often identified as Zanni, a character from the Commedia dell’Arte.
