You are along the route: SURPRISING NATURE. THE HISTORICAL GARDENS
Via della Pilotta, 17
Saturday 10:00-13:00. Admission fee.
Passing on Via della Pilotta under the three bridges connecting Palazzo Colonna with the hill that climbs towards the Quirinal, one does not imagine the surprise that awaits: a garden that makes spectacular use of the slope, with sculptures, ancient monumental ruins and the sound of bubbling water. The garden, which dates back to the beginning of the 1600s, is amongst the most secluded in the city and only recently opened to visitors by the Colonna family, the noble Roman family that gave the church popes and cardinals. A veritable treasure trove of beauty with terraces, a central waterfall surrounded by pots of citrus plants and culminating in a beautiful nymphaeum with rock gardens and mosaics. One of the sculptures is the statue of Marcantonio Colonna, who, in 1571, headed the papal fleet in the victorious battle against the Turks at Lepanto.
