The Roman domus (houses) on the Celian hill below the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, on the Clivus Scauri, the ancient road that went up the hill, are one of the most fascinating underground places in Rome. The site contains more than four centuries of history and witnesses the gradual and difficult transition from paganism to Christianity. The vast rooms, originally shops and warehouses of a building on several levels (insula), were in fact transformed by Senator Byzas during the third century AD into an elegant and luxurious home which was beautifully decorated with frescoes and which became a place of worship and assembly for the first Christians. It was from these origins that the Church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo was founded.
