During the Domitian era (81-96) inside the area of the Roman Forum a vast architectonical complex was built, a monumental vestibule of impreial palaces and connected to them through a still existing ramp. The Domitian ramp was integrating part of the complex leading to a magnificent room that during the VI century A.D. was transformed in a Christian worshipping place: the Oratory of the forty Martyrs of Sebaste, In that Armenian town during the Diocletian persecution 40 martyrs were condemned to die inside the cold water of a pond, because they refused to abjure. Probably this martyrion (a worshipping place for one or more martyrs) was established in connection with the neighbouring church Chiesa di S. Maria Antiqua, with which it was part of a unique complex.
